This document publicly states the position of the Vermont Recreation and Parks Association (VRPA) on issues facing community parks and recreation in Vermont. This document conveys to legislators, policymakers, the public and the media where we stand. The Platform and the standing issues will guide the association’s advocacy efforts.
STATE ISSUES
Advocate for distribution of state and federal funding to include park and recreation leisure services.
- Support grant funding of the Local Trees andVermont Trails and Recreation Facilities grant.
- Support legislation requiring inspection of public playground facilities by certified inspector, including compliance with national safety standards.
- Support legislation involving tobacco and drug free zones and illegal trespass at school facilities and public parks & facilities.
- Support legislation making physical assault of sports coaches, and officials a criminal offense.
- The implementation of the Vermont Health Weight Initiative (Obesity).
NATIONAL ISSUES
Maintain funding for the stateside LWCF Program
LEGISLATION PLATFORM
Support legislation which proposes to permit adults to assume, for themselves and for their minor children, the risks inherent in recreational activities by releasing negligence claims arising out of the adult’s or minors participation in the activity. (Bill H 606)
Support legislation to protect property of municipalities and State who allow recreational use of municipal and State lands. (Bill H 263)
Support legislation that proposes to require the agency of transportation, in its transportation project planning, development, and implementation activities, to adhere to “complete streets principles” (Bill H741)
